If you have been to the grocery store lately, you might have seen one of the many empty spots on the shelves in Colorado. This past week, I tried to find broccoli florets in the bag and it seems as if they have been canceled.

I went to five different stores over the course of two days, and couldn't find a single bag of broccoli florets. What's up with that? King Soopers, Walmart, Safeway, another King Soopers, and Costco. None of them had the little green trees that I love. I was so confused by the lack of broccoli that I even searched to see if there was a shortage of the vegetable. I couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

Eggs have been in short supply too and when you can find them, you nearly choke at the sight of the cost of a dozen eggs. I needed eggs for a few key dishes and literally cringed at the fact that I had to spend $9 for 18 eggs. Yep, nine dollars for one and a half dozen regular, run-of-the-mill eggs.

The shortage of eggs and the steep spike in price is due to the avian flu taking out over 85 percent of Colorado chickens.

Needless to say, times are tough if you love eggs. Times are also tough, especially on your wallet when it comes time to buy groceries. Supply chain issues, animal sickness, inflation, drought, and many other factors all play a part in rising food costs.

While searching for a reason as to why I could not find broccoli florets in the store, I did come across many sources saying there could be food shortages in 2023. More than what we are seeing now too. According to Eat This, Not That, these foods are in short supply as of December 2022.
