John Belushi’s New Year’s Eve Wedding in Colorado Was Missing One Thing
The comedic legend, whose life ended tragically, did manage to find great times. One of those highlights would be getting married in Colorado, just before the beginning of 1977.
Tens of thousands of people get married in Colorado every year, many of whom are celebrities, keeping it on the "down-low." How many Coloradans know or remember John Belushi's wedding that happened here, even though he forgot one pretty important thing.
Even though John Belushi passed away over 40 years ago in March of 1982, millions of people still love the man. From his meteoric rise on Saturday Night Live, to "Animal House," and "The Blues Brothers," it looked like there was no stopping him. However, we all know now, that there was indeed one thing that could stop him.
Five years before his drug use got the better of him, and lead to his death on March 5, 1982, John had been in great spirits; he decided it was time to marry his longtime partner, Judith Jacklin. They had met back in high school, in Wheaton, Illinois; Judy loved John and supported his career, the ups and the downs.

It was in 1975 that Belushi joined the cast of Saturday Night Live and really began to become a huge star. So many of his characters still live on today: The "Cheeseburger" owner at that Greek cafe, "Samurai Chef," and "The Blues Brothers." Add in the movies, "Animal House," "The Blues Brothers," "1941," "Continental Divide," and it's clear that he was already a legend, and he was less than a decade into his career.
In the 2020 Showtime documentary on John, they briefly touch on how John and Judy were married in Colorado, in 1976. The documentary doesn't even mention where, in Colorado, but they do flash the certificate on the screen:
Apparently, there's a funny story that goes along with the photo of the marriage license.
WHAT DID JOHN BELUSHI FORGET FOR HIS WEDDING IN COLORADO?
According to sources including FactRepublic.com, John forgot to bring any sort of identification with him on his wedding day. The story goes that he ended up asking the Garfield County judge if he watched Saturday Night Live; that apparently was enough for the judge to sign the marriage certificate. That is a great "Colorado Wedding" story.
The couple did get married on December 31, 1976, in Vail, and stayed married until John's passing. RIP, John.
