While motor vehicle theft is undoubtedly a problem in Colorado, when compared to previous years, 2025 saw a significant drop in these types of crime.

Motor Vehicle Theft in Colorado Was Down in 2025

Throughout 2025, 16,583 motor vehicle thefts were reported. These are crimes involving not just cars and trucks being stolen, but also all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, and snowmobiles, to name a few.

In contrast, the number of motor vehicle thefts in Colorado in 2024 was 30,414, 39,738 were reported in 2023, and 47,243 motor vehicle thefts were reported in Colorado in 2022.

In addition, over 9,000 of the motor vehicles stolen in 2025 were recovered, which equated to over $72 million in value recovered out of the $166.9 million worth of vehicles that were stolen.

Thefts From Motor Vehicles in Colorado Was Down in 2025

While the above statistics reflect motor vehicles that were actually stolen, Colorado also saw a decrease in thefts involving motor vehicles in which the vehicle wasn’t actually stolen, but some of its contents were.

15,858 thefts from motor vehicles were reported in 2025, while that number was over 24,000 in 2024, over 28,000 in 2023, and over 32,000 in 2022.

Colorado’s Motor Vehicle Theft Problem + Drugs

The most common crime associated with motor vehicle thefts in Colorado is illicit drug use. 48.9% of motor vehicle thefts in Colorado in 2025 were related to drugs, 36.5% were related to drug equipment violations, and 14.4% were associated with weapons law violations.

Roughly 50% of the drug-related violations above were associated with methamphetamine.
