Colorado Residents: Now is the Best Time to Adopt a Guinea Pig

If you've ever considered adopting a guinea pig as a pet, now might just be the best time to do so if you live in Colorado as hundreds of these animals were recently rescued from unsuitable conditions and need homes.

What Happened to These Colorado Guinea Pigs?

According to the shelter that took in the reported 500 guinea pigs, Cavies and Canines Animal Rescue, the animals were surrendered by their single owner who quite obviously couldn't properly take care of this astonishing number of pets.

The official Cavies and Canines Animal Rescue Facebook page had this to say about the conditions under which the animals were living:

The guinea pigs were found living in deplorable conditions—severely overcrowded in small plastic containers, lacking essential necessities such as hay, food, and water. We are in the process of rescuing what is estimated to be over 500 guinea pigs, many of which are pregnant and suffering from serious health issues.

The previous owner of the guinea pigs and her late husband had been running a business in which they bred the animals for upwards of 30 years. However, the operation became overwhelming after the woman's husband passed away, and, subsequently, the guinea pigs were rescued from the breeder and taken to the shelter.

While it's undoubtedly a move in the right direction for the neglected animals, Cavies and Canines Animal Shelter isn't exactly equipped to take in so many guinea pigs as the typical number from a rescue is 50 to 60 specimens as opposed to 500.
