Unfortunately, Colorado has been the setting for multiple high-profile mass shootings, but what could have been potentially the worst of its kind to take place at a ski resort was luckily put to a halt before it began, thanks to law enforcement and tips from individuals close to the would-be shooter.

Colorado Man was Planning a Mass Shooting at Breckenridge Ski Resort

The man, identified as 44-year-old Nathaniel Zabik, shared a gruesome plan with two people on Facebook in which he intended to shoot and kill “as many people as possible” and then take his own life.

The plan, which was outlined in 26 messages, was also politically motivated as Zabik was allegedly upset that Breckenridge Ski Resort was either frequented or inhabited by “all liberals” and, according to Zabik, “deserve to die anyway.”

It appears that Zabik intended to carry out his plan on January 7, 2026, but luckily, the people on Facebook who were aware of the man’s intentions notified the authorities, who were able to locate him, follow him in his car, and take him into custody.

The Breckenridge Ski Resort was also notified of the potential threat of violence and increased security measures that day, but luckily, police were able to detain Zabik before anything happened.

What’s Going to Happen to the Would-Be Colorado Shooter?

After Zabik was taken into custody, the would-be shooter was charged with felony Inciting Destruction of Life or Property, felony menacing, and harassment.

Zabik has a criminal history and has been arrested in Oklahoma over 30 times. He appeared in court on January 9, and his bail was set at $25,000.
