Before you head out, remember winter in Colorado means dressing in layers, even if it feels mild. If you plan to stay for the entire sunset, bring a headlamp or a flashlight (parking lots and pull-outs may be unlit). Check those tires before you go.

It seems like arriving 30-45 minutes before sunset is a good time. You can get comfortable, see the light change, and watch the cliffs glow. Pack something warm to drink. You might want a blanket or a chair. Sunsets don’t last too long, but you’ll want to stay comfortable anyway.

Here are several of the best (and accessible) sunset places in Western Colorado:

Colorado National Monument (Grand View / Rim Rock Drive)

  • Why it’s great: Towering cliffs, dramatic canyons, and southwestern rock formations glow orange or crimson as the sun sets.
  • Best spot: Pullouts along Rim Rock Drive (Grand View, Book Cliff View, or Independence Monument View), all easy to access with car parking.
  • Access notes: Paved drive, but winter conditions may affect timing or require caution. Check park status before you go.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (South Rim — Sunset View / Gunnison Point / Pulpit Rock Overlooks)

  • Why it’s great: The sheer, steep canyon walls carve deep shadows, setting dramatic scenes at dusk. Sunsets here feel wild and powerful.
  • Best spot: Sunset View is a short walk from the parking area and leads to an overlook with big canyon views.
  • Access notes: Park entry fee required. During winter, snow or ice can limit access to rim roads or overlooks, so check ahead.

Grand Mesa (High Mesa Overlooks or Scenic Byways)

  • Why it’s great: The elevated flat terrain offers expansive western-slope views at sunset if roads to the overlooks are passable.
  • Best spot: Accessible overlooks along the scenic byway or gravel spur roads (when open).
  • Access notes: Some roads may close for winter, or require careful driving in snow. A winter-ready vehicle is recommended.

December Weather & How It Shapes the Sunset

Colorado’s crisp and cold December weather often means clear skies and better light. These conditions help produce richer colors and more contrast. A little snow can really make the color pop, too.

A thin layer of clouds can also mean more color, with pinks and purples showing up across the valley. While rain clouds could block a sunset entirely, if the skies clear just enough after a storm, that is usually the best time to witness some magic.
