No matter where you go these days, when it comes to spending money, it seems like there is an extra question, expectation, and nothing is ever a simple total. It doesn't matter if you are at the grocery store, buying food at a fast food restaurant, going out to eat, or shopping for clothes; there is an expectation that you need to spend more than what you originally anticipated. Tipping appears to be mandatory these days, or donating to some sort of charity. In today's economy, every dollar matters, so why are we expected to spend extra? Has tipping become mandatory in Colorado, or is society pressuring residents to tip everywhere they go in the state?

Is Tipping Required in Colorado?

When someone goes out to eat, it is expected that they will tip the waiter or waitress. Now, society and social media would have you believing you have to tip an outrageous amount, but that isn't the case. Tipping should be based on the type of service you get. Better service equals better tips, and bad service equals a lower tip. Many waiters and waitresses today seem to expect to get big tips without putting in the work, and if they don't receive what they want, they will go to social media. The problem is that they leave out the part of the story on how their service was. While tipping when eating at a nice restaurant has been the norm for years, there are other places now asking for tips and pressuring customers.

Tipping in Colorado

It isn't only restaurants that are asking for tips anymore, as fast food chains are, anywhere you order a drink, and anyone who serves customers is typically asking for a tip. Even machines are asking for tips, as some gas stations will ask if you want to tip, which is absurd with how high gas prices are, and even when ordering food from a machine, it will ask for a tip, despite there being no human around to tip, which raises the question, who are you tipping? No longer are tips based on service, but they are now the expectation, and you are made to feel guilty if you don't tip. Even if you do, if it isn't a significant amount, you are still shamed.

It is ridiculous to tip a machine or for bad service. Don't let the pressure of society get to you when you are out eating. You work hard for your money, and nobody should dictate how you spend it. If you feel someone deserves a good tip, then let them know and tip them well. If your service is bad, let them know and let your tip show it, and perhaps they will learn from it. Tipping is not required in Colorado, no matter what social media and society want you to think.
