Have you ever stopped and wondered how many people actually live out here in Colorado? Don't feel bad if the answer is "no." We now live in an age where nearly all of the human knowledge is at our fingertips, so retaining pointless trivia isn't as impressive a party trick as it used to be. Still, now that I've asked the question, I bet you're thinking about it now, asking yourself, "How many people live in Colorado?"

"Quite a few," would be a perfectly acceptable answer, if you're not the type to think that hard about the kind of thing you stopped caring about after you left school. Luckily for you, that's why I'm here.

What is Colorado's Population?

According to the last census, in 2020 Colorado boasted a population of around 5.8 million people, with estimates from 2022 putting us closer to 5.9 million. We aren't quite there yet, but the trend is not only clear, but exactly what they've been telling us on the news for the past five years: Colorado is a popular destination for movers.

When you compare the data from 2020 to data from the census in 2010, you notice a jump from 5.03 million to about 5.77 million. I'm not a master mathematician or anything, but if we've already added nearly 100 thousand people to our population in just 2 years, I think we might be on the mark for a repeat in the next decade.

How About Our Neighbors?

"That's all well and good," I hear you ask, "but what about the neighboring states? It's all about competition, anyway. Tell me who is number one!"

This a fair question, and an easy answer. First, the stats: Utah currently has a population estimated at around 3.3 million, while our neighbor to the north, Wyoming, only has about 579 thousand people. Nebraska, our other neighbor up there, has an estimated population of 1.96 million. To the east, Kansas is home to about 2.9 million people, while Oklahoma holds 3.9 million. To the south, New Mexico claims around 2.1 million.

Who Won?

Unfortunately, to answer the question of who is number one, Arizona is the home of some 7.2 million Americans, so they'd probably "win." However, Colorado has a higher population than every other state that borders us, which is a great consolation prize.
